Thirty years in, I figured I’d seen it all. People keep proving me wrong. Give a group enough room and someone always says the thing you never saw coming, and it’s often kinder or funnier than expected. That’s why I think the job is mostly paying attention and being a good host, with a little instinct for when to step in and when to let the thread sort itself out. It usually does, and I take a quiet amount of credit anyway.
